By its area and population, Romania is the most important state in the Danube - Balkan space. Romania's geographical location facilitates access from practically all parts of Europe and by all means of possible transport - by plane, car, train or ship.

Surface: 238.391 square km, and it has a population of 22.545.925 inhabitants (as of 1997)
The capital of the country is Bucharest. The prevailing religion is Orthodox, the rest consists of 5.10% Roman -Catholic 3.52% Protestants and 4.57% other religions.
Local currency: "leu" (lei - plural). You will find coins of 1, 5, 10 and 50 (bani) or bank-notes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 (lei).
Foreign currency may be exchanged to lei upon arrival at the airport, banks, otels or exchange offices. It is advisable to avoid making currency exchanges in the open streets.

Traveller cheques: You may cash them especially in banks (the exchange is open currently till 12,00). Most merchants, including hotels and restaurants, do not accept travellers cheques.
Credit cards: Visa, Mastercard and Eurocard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and some important shops. You usually have to show your passport.
ATM-s (cash distributors): The ATM network is in extension. Depending on the owner (bank), there is a daily sum limit (about 3000 LEI - 950 US$) and a sum limit per transaction (about 400 LEI - 130 US$).

Climate
Romania has a temperate climate with 4 seasons. The spring can be a changeable season, the warmth of the day rapidly turns into cold morning and evening. In the summer temperatures can easily reach 35-40 °C. The fall is usually rainy and the winters are extremly cold with lots of snow from December to March.

Transportation
You can reach any place you want travelling by plane, train, bus, automobil or by foot.
Airplane: flying between the major cities of Romania or other parts of the world is now made possibly due to the airline competition in Romania.

Railway: the railway network is very well developed, it covers a large area of the country and it can be considered the most popular way of transportation the cheapest and the slowest trains are the so called “personal” trains. The next category of trains (a little more expensive but faster) are the “Intercity”, “Rapid” or “Accelerat” trains.
