In this region are the oldest Christian monuments built in the Middle Age: in Streisangeorgiu, Densus, Strei. The Arboretum Simeria, at about 15 km from Deva, is a Dendrological reservation, having a unique value for the national patrimony. The Retezat National Park, located in the Retezat Mountains, is a natural reserve area with more than 80 glacier lakes and rare alpine flora and fauna, complemented by breathtaking scenery.
