Known as the village in which Prince Charles of Great Britain has a vacation home, Viscri is more than that. In this Saxon village, located at 30 km from Sighisoara, can be visited the oldest fortified church in Transylvania, dating from 1210, but it could be found an universe of peace, far away from the third millennium tumult.
On the way up to the church, on the right side, one may spot the hostel situated in the houses with the numbers 44 and 38, who can accommodated guests, with 15 beds, a dining room and utilities for a decent comfort. Guests will be delighted with the Saxon style, in which are traditionally decorated the houses, as one visits and lives in a museum of traditional villages.
The food is prepared with a local specific flavour, all ending with the sweetness of mulberry jam, famous among the tourists who visit the area. In the courtyard there is an, already famous, small coffee shop, where one can buy artisan hand-made crafts and products made by the women in the village and around. For people who want to feel really clean air area, the Guesthouses at 44 and 38 may be willing to walk in the woods and hills in the area, to see the charcoal pits, the wool spinning workshop, the black bread oven, the sheepfolds, with tasting of the traditional cheeses, and the horse riding hours. For those who feel brave enough, it can be even organized some activities practiced by local peoples such as mowing or blacksmiths works, and for those who are more lazy, they may enjoy the delights in traveling in a cart filled up with hay. Calendar of events Viscri may include: Crown Flowers Feast (29 June), Summer Schools for various arts and botany, organ concerts and pre- and classical music at the Church. What is going more around: the Festival of Medieval Art and Craft from Sighisoara, Young Boys Festival in Brasov or Cheese or Wine Feasts in Rupea and Brasov. Considering the village, quite rightly considered by locals as "The Earth’s Belly", natives of Viscri are proud in telling that: "Whoever comes to Viscri, sticks for ever!
