Sibiu

Sibiu is the capital city of Sibiu county, located in the Sibiu depression, crossed by the Cibin river, not far from the Fagaras mountains.

Known in German as Hermannstadt, Sibiu has always been the centre of Romania's German minority since medieval times, today is the European capital of culture 2007.

Even today, it contains Romania's largest German community, the Germanic feel of the area has been maintained. Sibiu also has a significant Hungarian minority, remnants of Transylvania's past as part of the Hungarian Empire and, later, Austria-Hungary. Despite this, Sibiu is also distinctly Romanian (95% of the population are ethnic Romanians) and manages to fuse these three cultures, as well as smaller minorities of Roma, Slovaks and Ukrainians into a city that is as wonderful as it is vibrant.

Sibiu it is a place with vibrant cultural life, a university centre. Has a great tourist potential, tourism is favoured by the town’s medieval vestiges and its pitoresque surrounding (eg. Paltinis mountain resort). A great number of cultural monuments, a diversity of museums, and various artistic and cultural events, make up the pillars of a complex cultural profile.

Sibiu in the early 15th century it was surrounded with strong walls, bastions and towers (The tower of the Council, The Stepped tower, The Gate Tower, The Carpenters‘ tower, The Potters Tower). A part of it has survived. The town ‘s tower and the Staircase Street recall the medieval times. The cathedral has a 70m high spire with four smaller spires, from here can be seen the whole city. In front of the cathedral was erected the statue of G.D. Teutsch, Saxon evangelical Bishop of Transylvania. The Old City hall presently accommodates the historical museum. The Great Square was fortified, has many historical buildings (The Haller Museum, The Bruchenthall museum, founded in 1790, one of the oldest museum, the roman catholic church), the Little Square, the second fortified square, the wall of the fortess and the Hartenek towers, are the third fortified ring.

In Sibiu there are also a lot of religious edificies, numerous museums, pleasant parks.
