Oradea one of the most beautiful cities of Eastern Europe, capital of the Bihor county, and also is the entrance gate to Romania on the western border. It has the spirit of the "belle époque", rightly was called in the early 20 century le Petit Paris. The city Oradea is located on the banks of Crisul Repede, at the junction of Western Plain and the lowest hill range of the Apuseni Mountains. Oradea is crossed by the trade route wich bound Western Central and south Eastern Europe to the far East, this helped the city to became an important political, religious, economical and cultural center.
Oradea was first attested documentary in 1113 under the name of Varadinum, and between 1114-1131 was built the citadel.
The Town Hall of Oradea built in 1900 in ecletic style. The clock tower rises high, its lines remind of the town halls of Arad and Gyor. St Ladislav bridge over the river Crisul Repede connecting the squares St Ladislav and Bemer. In the background is the Theater Szigligeti, designed by Fellner and Hellner ( they designed the theatre of Cluj Napoca), Vienesse theatre designers. The County library is an ornamented Modern Style building, was built in 1905, the same year when the Greek Catholic Bishop Palace. The Roman Catholic Cathedral is the greatest in baroque style in Romania. The Hermits’ Row is not far from the Roman Catholic cathedral, has an interesting corridor of 200m length, designed with a row of 52 arches.
Some other interesting buildings are the Moon church, the Black Eagle Palace (secession style), the Astoria Hotel and Café, the Poynar Palace, the Apollo Palace, The Stern Palace, the Ady Endre museum, the Iosif Vulcan museum.
Oradea is a city which with its edificies have always charmed and will charm its visitors.
