Deva
 


Deva municipality, rezidence of Hunedoara county, situated on the Mures Valley, at the foot of the Fortress Hill. The name of Deva it is considered that comes from the dac word «dava » meanininf fortress or castle.

The Fortress Hill houses the Fortess of Deva, medieval building certified sience 1290 and the botanical reservation. The fortress had two levels limited by the elements kept till present. Its walls exploded in 1849 because of the explosion at the ammunition warehouse, the fortress being no more rennovate.

The Bethlen Castle was built in the Renaissance style with baroque elements in the XVI-the century, houses today the Museum of the Dacian and Roman Civilization.

The Church and the Claustron of the Franciscans’ Monastery raised in the baroque style. The Prefecture Palace built in German Renaissance it is remarkable by the sizes and ornaments of the festive hall at the first floor. Today houses the Art Museum.

The Bejan Forest is a dendrological reservation, covers a surface of 103 ha. With beautiful oak species.

Several turistic sights are situated around the city, Deva is a good starting point for different kind of rally trips. Hunedoara Castle is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Central and Eastern Europe, with baroque and renaissance influences. In the Hateg Depression are the ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetuza, the capital city of the Roman Dacia. Later the capital city moved to Sarmisegetuza Regia, near Orastie. In this region are the oldest Christian monuments built in the Middle Age: in Streisangeorgiu, Densus, Strei. The Arboretum Simeria, at about 15 km from Deva, is a Dendrological reservation, having a unique value for the national patrimony. The Retezat National Park, located in the Retezat Mountains, is a natural reserve area with more than 80 glacier lakes and rare alpine flora and fauna, complemented by breathtaking scenery.
